ALL THAT YOU POSSESS

Dir: Bernard Émond, Canada, 2012, 91 min, French with English subtitles | Cast: Patrick Drolet, Willa Ferland-Tanguay

A moving, quiet drama about legacy, responsibility and human connectedness.

Pierre Leduc, professor of literature at a Quebec university, despairs for his students and the world at large. Crushed by this existential burden, he decides to quit his job and abandon material pursuits. When teenager Adèle, the daughter he abandoned before she was born, appears in his life, his attempt to withdraw into isolation is disrupted.

A clumsy but touching relationship develops between the two as the reunion revives his will to live and cracks begin to appear in his stony exterior. Pierre’s love of poetry permeates this unique depiction of the power of solitude, and conversely, that of connectedness. It’s a simple philosophical meditation  beautifully expressed through the film’s minimalist form and content.

“Resonates through its minimalist approach to realism, and its universal message about slowing down and getting back to basics in today’s fast-paced, wired-in, and highly materialist society” – Cinemablographer
