This year Michael Dowse is enjoying a solid hit with hockey comedy Goon. Back in 2004, he delivered this funny, but also surprisingly affecting comedy about a superstar DJ who goes deaf, winning Best Canadian Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Paul Kaye excels as Frankie, Europe's most talented and lusted-after DJ. After years of excess - parties, women, drugs - Frankie ends up stone deaf, losing his fans, record deal, manager and wife. Determined to pull himself together, he decides to accept a new way of life and rediscovers the dance rhythms that had first inspired him.
This spot-on faux biopic recalls 24 Hour Party People in its irreverent but affectionate look at the scene, the players (cameos by Pete Tong, Carl Cox...) and the music (soundtrack is by 808 State's Graham Massey). Seek it out as a fun warm-up to a big night out.
- Matt Ravier
"You'll be tickled by this small indie laugher. But, lo and behold, you may find yourself touched by it, too." - The Washington Post
